The Splendour of Light , Concerto for Orchestra.

I returned to London last autumn , 2005 , from Edinburgh straight after the controversy of my and Dic Edwards’s opera Manifest Destiny -set among would be suicide bombers who renounce violence - and its controversial press in the Festival. The composition of Splendour of Light , a Concerto for Orchestra , took place over the next few months and the tensions of that summer therefore flowed into the new work. I was struck by the intense heat in London at the end of August after the relative coolness of Edinburgh – a heat in which the swirling fear from the bombs of July was still palpable , a sort of tragic glamour. This perhaps found immediate expression in some of the complexities of the new Concerto for Orchestra and its stark contrasts of dark and light.
